Mariana’s peace

,

Nice sized red fruit with abundance of flavor and a rich history. The story of Marianna’s Peace tomato is quite fascinating.

Marianna comes from a family of farmers in Bohemia, Czechoslovakia. It is a story of strife, perseverance, and peace. During the Second World War Marianna was taken with her classmates by Russian soldiers to be sent by truck to Siberia. She was a girl of 17 years old. She jumped off the truck and escaped, but was shot in the leg while she crossed the Czech border. Luckily she managed to make it to the town of Weiden in Bavaria with a few other escapees. Afterwards she lost contact with her family. After ten years of tireless searching, with the help of The Red Cross they were reunited. Her father gave her tomato seeds before he died. Later, Marianna immigrated to Washington, got married, and raised four children, where she grew this tomato, and it was named for her.

The Marianna’s Peace tomato is a lovely big red tomato. The texture is smooth and juicy. The flavor is complex, sweet, savory, and rich. The concentration of flavor is unparalleled.
