Originally from China, and is presumably named after Chinese human rights activist Huang Qi (黃琦) . The other explanation is that of another interpretation of the name Qi Huang (凄惶), which means distressed, or terrified. If it is the later, it would coincide with the American expression ‘scared yellow’ as the Qi Huang tomato is yellow. Regardless of the naming of this beautiful heirloom, the fruits are quite extraordinary. It is a round fruit about the size of a large golf ball and has the color of the golden sun.

The fruits have few seeds. The flavor is sweet and creamy with and explosive citrus finish.
