Its color is gold with dark purple smudged at the top. It is about as hot as a Habanero pepper and has about 100,000 and 300,000 SHU. Some people claim it was brought to St. Augustine Florida by indentured workers from Menorca at the end of the 18th century. Others position that a jelly maker named S.B Valis brought it from Cuba in 1880. However, \u00a0Today it is so popular a pepper that the first Saturday in the month of October is Datil Day in Florida. In 2013 scientific investigation into The Datil Peppers origin and Daniel Cantliffe, a professor of Horticultural Sciences, had this to say \u201cThe one thing I want to make completely clear to everyone: St Johns County is the only place on the planet that this plant, the Datil, has come from \u2026 It originated and came from St. Augustine. We have looked around the planet; we can\u2019t find it anywhere else&#8221;.
