Clove Basil (Ocimum gratissimum) Ocimum viride, and Ocimum suave

The Clove basil (Ocimum gratissimum sometimes  called Ocimum viride, or Ocimum suave) is nicknamed “Tree basil” because it is larger than most basils, often growing to be 3-4 feet tall. Native to Africa, and is grown widely through India and Brazil. Known well for its intense fragrance, a combination of sweet and spicy just like a clove but with a strong herbal overtones. the flowers are white and have a special bitter taste which contrasts well with the sweet and spicy leaves. The Clove Basil is also special because it is a Perennial. It is often called African basil, Himalayan basil, Tree basil and East Indian basil. In Indonesia the Clove Basil is very popular and called “Ruku-ruku rimba” and used to make tea. Clove basil is delicious along side of meats and vegetables, or added to soups and stews and is a good substitute for thyme.

Historically, basil has been used as a medicinal herbal and is believed to help digestion, lower blood pressure, and calm symptoms of lung disease. These are just a few of the many health benefits. Basil is great for aroma therapy from the extraction of its oils.. Symbolically, it has represented both love and hate depending on which culture you ask. The Ancient Greeks and Romans had negative associations with it and they would traditional curse and shout when planting it. Perhaps play loud music If you decide to try that next time you plant basil so you don’t disturb your neighbors.
