Orange Datil Pepper (Capsicum Chinense)

Many myths take their stabs at explaining the origin of the Datil Pepper. The name “Datil” comes from both Spanish and Catalan words for date palm because it resembles its shape. Its color is gold with dark purple smudged at the top. It is about as hot as a Habanero pepper and has about 100,000 and 300,000 SHU. Some people claim it was brought to St. Augustine Florida by indentured workers from Menorca at the end of the 18th century. Others position that a jelly maker named S.B Valis brought it from Cuba in 1880. However,  Today it is so popular a pepper that the first Saturday in the month of October is Datil Day in Florida. In 2013 scientific investigation into The Datil Peppers origin and Daniel Cantliffe, a professor of Horticultural Sciences, had this to say “The one thing I want to make completely clear to everyone: St Johns County is the only place on the planet that this plant, the Datil, has come from … It originated and came from St. Augustine. We have looked around the planet; we can’t find it anywhere else”. Remarkable.
