Armenian Yard Long Snake Melon Cucumber (Cucumis melo var. flexuosus)

, ,

While looking like a cucumber and tasting like a cucumber the Armenian cucumber/Yard Long Snake Melon (Cucumis melo var. flexuosus) is actually a muskmelon (C. Melo), which is a close relative to the cucumber (C. sativus) which we know and love. The Armenian Cucumber (or Yard Long Snake Melon) is long and sage colored and has smooth skin that is very thin. Other common names are Tirozî (Kurdish), Acuri (Turkish) Uri (Japanese), kakri (Hindi), tar (Punjabi), طرح  (Arabic), commarella or tortarello (Italian). These fruits can grow up to 3 feet long, but the flavor is best when it is 12-15″. The texture is delicate which makes it a great cucumber or salads.
