The Datterino tomato is a small date shaped fruit but the flavor is big and extremely sweet. It has an unusually high brick content (Brix are the unit of sugars measured in fruits). It is an Italian classic tomato used for canning, fresh eating, and for sun-drying. They are grown in Southern Sicily and prized for their sweetness. The fruits are small, slightly larger than a cherry tomato and a bit oval shaped. They have thin skin, soft flesh and a a low seed count. The name “Datterino” means Date in Italian. When guests come to my garden, this is the plant that I have to pull people away from, so that there are fruits for other visitors.
The seeds were sourced in Sicily.
