The name the words Ivan, the Slavic name for John the Baptist, and Kupala, the Slavic word for bathing or purity. This holiday celebrated the baptism ritual, but is also associated with Kupajla or Kupalo, the harvest god. Traditionally the holiday takes place around the summer equinox and the traditions and customs associated with this holiday have roots in Pagan rituals. Ivan Kupala day is a very jolly and colorful day usually occurring between June 22nd and July 7th.
