This variety might be the favorite of Sicilian tomato lovers. It’s name means “red Grape” in Italian. It is one of the four IGP designated tomatoes from Pachino, Sicily, from the southern most part of Sicily, where tomato growing has become a big part of the economy. In fact, the Pachino tomato varieties are some of the most sought after tomatoes in Europe. They are IGP (protected geographical indication) like the sparkling wine of Champagne, or the San Marzano tomatoes of Napoli.

The fruits are bright pinkish red about the size and shape of big grapes. The fruits are bright red, slightly larger than a cherry and bursting with sugary sweetness. It is believed that these tomatoes get their high brick content from the high salinity, occurring in the Pachino aquifers from sea water flooding, and the high mineral levels of the native volcanic soil. The growing climate could also be a factor, as the warm days and sunlight offer perfect conditions for many tomato varieties.

These little grape tomatoes pack a big sweet flavor. The flavor is so sweet that it is odd. The Rosso a Grappolo is known for its high brick content (the measurement of sugars in fruit) and the concentration level is believed to be from a combination of climate, rich volcanic mineral in the soil, and the high sea salt water that floods their irrigation aquifers.
