Sgt. Pepper’s Tomato

, ,

The Sgt. Peppers Tomato grows on indeterminate vines and takes 70 days to ripen.

This unusual heart shaped tomato has dark black shoulders from high concentrations of anthocyanin, making it a highly nutritious fruit. The parents of Sgt. Peppers tomato are the extraordinary German Red Strawberry and Oregon Stat University (OSU) Blue tomato created by Jason Haynes. The fruits can be between 12 ounces to almost 2 pounds and is unique for being the first anthocyanin heart shaped variety.

The flavor is top notch and the texture is wonderful as to be expected from its parentage. The fruits have some of the darkest shoulders and pinkest flesh. Fresh eating is best with this variety, but they also serve well as a garnish, salad ingredient, or sandwich topper. As these are thin skinned tomatoes, do your best to avoid over watering throughout the season.
