The name “Malakhitovaya Shkatulka” is Russian for “Malachite Box”. In the Ural Mountains the mineral malachite is farmed. The growth pattern of this variety is Indeterminate and is considered an early variety, especially for its size, and ripens in only 70 days. It isn’t a large variety but some fruits have been up to 14 ounces. While the skin is a dull amber the flesh is a stunning bright green and the flavor is outstanding with its low acidity but strong old world tomato flavor and balance of sugar and complexity. Performes well in cold climates.

The variety was developed by the Svetlana Farm in Russia. There have been successful grow outs in Siberia, making it an interesting tomato for growing in northern colder regions of the United States, particularly in northern California where the summer fog and cold temperatures usually challenge other tomato varieties. Thanks to Tatiana Kouchnarev (Tatiana’s TOMATObase) we in the United States are able to grow the Malakhitovaya Shkatulka after she gave it to the SEE in 2007. Tatiana originally got the seeds from Tamara Yaschenko from Biysk, Siberia, It has a meaty flesh with few seed pockets limiting the juice, making it a great sandwich tomato. If you only have room for one GWR (Green When Ripe) Tomato then this should be your choice!
