Ribbed and flat, stocky shaped greenish black skinned pumpkin with wart like bumps, weighing between 3-5 pounds,When mature the skin turns pale orange. The flesh is burned orange and with a creamy and buttery texture. The flavor is nutty and savory and almost smokey notes of fire roasted chestnuts. The Black Futsu Squash is an ancient variety cultivated in Japan since the 17th century and believed to have been brought to Japan in the 16th century by the Portuguese. They are eaten raw and cooked. The variety is very productive and has a good compact growth habit. During the winter in Japan they celebrate the winter solstice with the Toji festival of Yin and Yang. During this festival people bath in tubs filled with Yuzu. Eating warm comforting foods is believed to be a panacea for fighting off sickness and evil. The Black Futsu Squash is traditionally cooked as a stew with red beans for good luck.
